Omega Watches - A beief history

Omega was founded in Switzerland in 1848 by Louis Brandt. Brandt made pocket-watches which he sold all over Europe with parts supplied by local craftsmen. When Brandt died in 1879 his two sons, Louis-Paul and César took over the company and eventually moved production to the Gurzelen district of Biel, where the company resides today. By supplying parts in-house and with the success of the Omega calibre in 1894 the company was well on its way to becoming a major player in the high-end luxury watch market.

After the death of Louis-Paul and César Brandt in 1903 Paul-Emile Brandt eventually took over the company and had a major impact on its developments over the next 50 years. In 1917 the company unveiled the first watch for the vision-impaired and blind. In 1932 Omega played the role of the official timekeeper at teh first Olympic Games in Los Angeles. This technology allows for reduced friction between the escape wheel and pallets to ensure greater accuracy.

After several years of financial trouble in the mid-1980s the Société suisse de Microélectronique et d'Horlogerie eventaully took over the company. Today the Société suisse de Microélectronique et d'Horlogerie is now the Swatch Group, is one of the largest watch makers in the world, and counts Omega as one of its most successful brands.
